SHOWJUMPING – All –Ireland U21 Champion
The John Ledingham is one of the most hotly contested competitions which takes place each year at the Irish Pony Club Championships.
However Carlow landed this top prize in the All-Ireland U21 competition at Mullingar Equestrian Centre in July.
The team of Catherine Kavanagh riding Coppenagh Blitz, Megan Telford Kelly riding Fond of a Drop, Nira O’ Gorman riding New Park Ghareeb and James Kavanagh riding Tankardstown Quality Cruise are a dedicated group of young individuals with an abundance of talent. Under the guidance of chef d’equipe Alyson Freeman the team had to qualify to compete in the final at the area qualifier in Boswell Equestrian Centre Co Wicklow where they came out on top. From there they travelled to Mullingar where they performed to an incredibly high standard competing against 28 other teams from all corners of Ireland.
Here the team rose to the challenge and were victorious in bring the John Ledingham show jumping cup to Carlow for the first time.
The four riders on this victorious team are a hard working group, giving all their time and effort to a sport they love and no doubt will bring success to Carlow Hunt Pony Club again in the not too distant future.
TETRATHLON – James Kavanagh
Carlow Hunt pony club member James Kavanagh from Borris has had a phenomenal year while competing at both national and international tetrathlon competitions; a demanding pursuit which requires excellence in swimming, running, riding and shooting. James began his training with the Irish Pony Club in February. From there he was selected as a member of the Irish Junior team who travelled to the regional championships in the UK in June where the Irish International team landed first place. James was placed seventh as an individual. The main event of the summer was the Irish Pony International competition which took place in Tattersalls, Co Meath in August. Once again James was a member of the winning team and he also claimed first place in the International class. He gave a spectacular shooting display recording 10 bulls eyes using a pistol, while also winning the swimming phase of the competition.
Over the same weekend James claimed third place individually in the Irish National Championship which is different to the international competition in that Ireland shoot with a rifle rather than a pistol. James finished his summer by travelling back to the UK as a member of the Irish international intermediate team.
Once again the team came victorious with James claiming third place overall as an individual. To cap a fine year, at the Irish Pony Club Show jumping classic finals in September, he once agin again took first place in the 1m class. A great end to an incredible year.
