Well done to James Kavanagh who represented Ireland at the UK Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships. The Irish boys team of which James was a member were placed first. The two other Irish boys teams were placed second and sixth, the Irish girls team were placed second and eight James was placed seventh individually and had a super clear round on a very tough technical course. James swam particularly well achieving fourth place . James also scored very well in both running and shooting. WELL DONE JAMES!

CHPC at National Minimus Championships 22-24th May 2015!!
18 of our U12 members travelled to compete at the National Minimus Championships in Mallow, Co. Cork last weekend. Carlow Pony Club had 5 teams participating against over 300 competitors made up of 78 teams. For 10 of our competitors it was their first ever national minimus competition, so a huge well done to Hannah Kehoe, Alec Redmond, Ellen Kelly, Avril Kelly, Owen Dowling, Cara Kelly, Mary Hickey, James Browne and a special well done to Kate and Gillian Byrne who steered Tom Boy twice around the course, also their first time competing at Minimus.
In the cross country phase the parents and coaches noticed that a bigger and more technical track was set by the Irish Pony Club. Only 77 of the 300 competitors who took on the very technical cross country course came home with zero penalties. 8 of these were from Carlow Pony Club and importantly 3 of these clear rounds came from the Carlow Speed Machines; Julie Hatton, Sophie Bolger and Matthew Farrell and 2 from the Carlow Challengers ridden by Claire and Michelle Kavanagh. Other clear rounds came from Avril Kelly, Alec Redmond and Owen Dowling all riding their first national standard course. A tremendous achievement.
The Carlow Speed Machines were one of only 8 teams to finish cross country on maximum points.
In the swimming phase Michelle Kavanagh swam best for Carlow completing 4 lengths & 22 meters and her team mates Sophie Bolger, Sophie Walsh James Browne and Claire Kavanagh just 1 meter behind Michelle, swimming an excellent 4-21.
Two of the Carlow teams were well in contention coming into the running phase lieng 7th and 8th. In the running phase the Carlow Speed Machines all ran under 4 minutes. Matthew Farrell ran a Carlow best of 3:38, closely followed by Hannah Kehoe who ran 3:42. Both Matthew and Hannah have 2 more years at this competition and they will be joined by James Browne who ran in 3:53 in his first ever minimus who also has 2 more years U12. Michelle Kavanagh ran 4:04 and Sophie Walsh also ran her personal best in a time of 4:05.
When all the scores were counted, Carlow Pony Club found themselves on the podium on 4 occasions, a tremendous result and one for which all their parents are very proud. Julie Hatton, Sophie Bolger, Hannah Kehoe and Matthew Farrell made it into the top 6 best teams. Claire Kavanagh, Michelle Kavanagh, Sophie Walsh and Stephen Lawlor finished in 18th place also receiving rosettes. Carlow Pony Club also achieved individual successes with Matthew Farrell claiming 3rd prize for best boy runner. Sophie Bolger made the podium for the best 10 individual girl competitors and scoring the highest points for Carlow Pony Club of 3396 closely followed by Michelle Kavanagh scoring 3344 and finishing in 14th place in individual girls. Matthew Farrell was just out of the medals finishing 11th in the individual boys competition and Hannah Kehoe was placed 9th in running with her strong run of 3:42.
Well done to all the kids for their hard work. Well done from the Committee and our DC's Martin Murphy and Michael Kelly who were there to cheer the kids on (and help keep the parents calm !). The kids, siblings and parents had a great weekend, the weather was generous and the atmosphere was magic especially for our traditional BBQ that had a 'new' twist this year, thanks to Bairbre Browne, Eileen Brennan and Breda Kavanagh for their efforts.
Thanks to Jimmy Dermody for all his training and important advice for the kids, the course walk with Jimmy on Friday evening was invaluable.
Carlow Pony Club expect to build on this weekend's achievements and aspire to having 3 teams next year in the top 20 and attaining a top 3 team placing. Many of this years competitors are eligible again next year and we have lots of fit siblings waiting for their debut :) Roll on Minimus 2016.
